Magic Lantern

Photos from the family album, enlarged on large Xerox transparencies, framed under layers of fiberglass nets, 77-100X120 cm, 1997.

As the daughter of a generation whose biographies were involved in dramatic national events, my family album combines photos conveying the national ethos with day-to-day family photos. The album fascinated me from my childhood and structured an autonomous memory which did not correspond to my private memories. In order to mirror this disturbing subjective experience not represented in the album itself, I extracted small photos of my mother and her daughters, turned the images into large Xerox transparencies and then framed them under layers fiberglass nets. The encounter between the nets creates an illusion of depth and motion. The pictures are enlivened as in a magic lantern forming scenery in which one could walk through the gallery space.

תצלומים מאלבום המשפחה מוגדלים על שקפי זירוקס גדולים, ממוסגרים תחת שכבות של רשתות פיברגלס, 120X77-100 ס"מ, 1997.

כבת לדור של הורים שהביוגרפיה שלהם כרוכה באירועים לאומיים דרמתיים, אלבום המשפחה שלי הכיל תמהיל מורכב בין תצלומים שמשקפים את האתוס הלאומי לבין תצלומי המשפחה. האלבום הילך עלי קסם כבר מילדותי והִבנה עבורי זיכרון אוטונומי משל עצמו שלא חפף את הזיכרון הפרטי. במטרה לתת מראה לחוויה הסובייקטיבית המטרידה שלא היה לה ייצוג באלבום, חילצתי רק את התצלומים הקטנים של הבנות והאם, הפכתי אותם לשקפי זירוקס גדולים ומסגרתי אותם תחת מיסוך של שכבות מרשתות פיברגלס. המפגש בין הרשתות יצר אשליה של עומק ותנועה. התמונות מקבלות חיות כבפנס קסם, שהופך אותן לתפאורה, בעלת גודל ונפח שאפשר להלך בתוכה בחלל הגלריה.
