Sea Myth

This work deals with the disturbing relation between national myth and family myth. Photos from the family album were tossed in a disorderly fashion into boxes, combining personal family photos with historical photos. My revered father-hero and mother whose lively youth took place in a stormy period of history are exposed. Utilizing the computer, I juxtaposed details from childhood photos of me and of my sisters, youthful photos of our parents, naval vessels and testimonies from crucial battle scenes.
“Ben-Nun Melamed examines the hazy border areas between the personal-intimate and the public-political in a culture in which national pathos and heroic myth often acquire primary status and may overshadow the private context. […] The result is processed photography, divided and combined, fusing national mythology with the mythological family.”

העבודות עוסקות בחיבור הטורד בין המיתוס הלאומי לזה המשפחתי. חומרי אלבום המשפחה שלי, שהתכנסו ללא סדר בקופסאות קרטון, מערבבים יחד את ההיסטוריה המשפחתית עם תצלומים היסטוריים. אב גיבור נערץ ואם שנעוריה מלאי החיים עברו בתקופה סוערת בתולדות המדינה נחשפים דרך התמונות. באמצעות המחשב הפגשתי פרטים מתוך תצלומים שונים שהוצאתי מאלבום המשפחה: אחיותיי ואני בילדותנו, הורי בצעירותם, כלי שייט מלחמתיים ועדויות למבצעים צבאיים בעלי חשיבות לאומית.
"בן-נון מלמד בוחנת את אזורי הגבול המטשטשים שבין הפרטי והאינטימי לבין הציבורי-פוליטי בתרבות שבה הפאתוס הלאומי והמיתוס ההרואי מאפילים על כל הקשר פרטי ואישי ונתפסים כבעלי מעמד ראשוני [...] התוצאה: צילום מטופל, חצוי, מחובר, מעורר מחשבה. המיתוס המשפחתי, או המשפחה המיתולוגית מתערבבים כאן זה בזה".
