The Sea Chronicle

Processed and unprocessed digital photographs, archival pigment prints, 48X66 cm, 2016-2019.
The digital photographs are printed in black and white on archival cotton paper called Platine that imitates precious platinum silver prints. I then inserted them into a passe-partout, sometimes a single photo, sometimes a pair. This form of presentation brings to mind landscape photography which is deeply anchored in the history of photography.
From photo to photo the gestalt is shaken, the world view is disrupted, cracks appear - at times small, barely noticeable - confusing familiar perceptions. Where did it happen? When did it happen? Did it happen? Day turns into night, night into day.
Side by side appear unrealistic landscapes above and under water, sand survivors laying on the beach and skeletons of drowned ships The photographic glance into the past, supposed to support our base of knowledge, now acquires new significance. It affirms internalized, archaic experiences with no boundaries, in which death is frozen and indifferent.
In this video art work we watch a sculpture of a woman lying restrained in water with her eyes closed. She is monumental, sculpted in bronze, but it seems she is moving gently in the water and breathing. The sculpture is located in Venice, the work of Augusto Murer and is part of a monument memorizing the women partisans of the Venetto region. The drama is not in the radical violent circumstances represented by the sculpture, but in the quiet, stubborn and steady destructiveness of the water, slowly and repetitively grinding the sculpture. Wave after wave the figure disappears into the darkness.

מתצלום לתצלום התבנית מתערערת, תמונת הנוף משתבשת, סדקים נפערים, לעיתים קטנים כמעט בלתי מורגשים, שמתעתעים בתפיסות המוכרות. מתי זה היה? היכן זה היה? האם זה היה? היום מתחלף בלילה והלילה ביום.
זה לצד זה מונחים נופים תלושים מעל ומתחת למים, ניצולים מחול המוטלים על החוף, ושלדים של אוניות טרופות.
הצילום המביט לכאורה אל העבר ופונה אל תשתית הידע שלנו, מקבל משמעות אחרת. הוא מעניק מראה לחוויות פנימיות, לעיתים קמאיות, נטולות גבולות, שהמוות מצוי בהן קפוא ואדיש.
